Muthulakshmi Raghavan is an Indian author of novels, short stories, and essays. Her first novel was published in 1963 and she has written about a dozen novels since then. She has been influenced by her father’s love for reading and writing as well as her upbringing in the Tamil culture which values storytelling. Muthulakshmi left India to study at Mount Holyoke College where she studied English literature.
Muthulakshmi’s writings are greatly focused on the female perspective and cultural customs that surround them such as arranged marriage, dowries, etc. Some of these themes have been seen with Western influences; however they still maintain their roots in Indian culture while also being more accessible to non-Indian audiences.
