However, as the protests gained momentum, they evolved into a broader non-cooperation movement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had been in power for over a decade.

In mid-July 2024, Nahid and several other student leaders from Dhaka University were detained by police as the protests intensified and turned violent. This event, however, only fueled the movement further. On August 5, 2024, facing immense pressure from the movement and widespread public dissent, Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country. Nahid and his fellow activists declared that their struggle was far from over, stating that their ultimate goal was to “abolish fascist systems forever.”

Role in the Interim Government

Following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, Nahid and his group of activists called upon Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to lead an interim government.
